Who are the Eye Clinic Liaison Officers (ECLOs)?

The role of ECLOs

Most hospital eye clinics now have an ECLO working closely with the medical, nursing and sensory teams to provide both practical and emotional support to patients diagnosed with an eye condition. This enables you to better understand your diagnosis and most importantly maintain your independence.

Each ECLO has time to dedicate to patients following consultation giving you the opportunity to discuss the impact your eye condition will have on your life. An ECLO is available to provide up-to-date, tailored information about local and national resources and advocate, or make referrals on your behalf.

Information available will include:

  • Eye conditions
  • Welfare benefits
  • Employment issues
  • Rehabilitation
  • Social Services
  • Children's services
  • Voluntary organisations
  • Support groups

The role of the ECLO is flexible, and we will try to answer any questions you might have, including those about your future treatment.

ECLOs offer a free service to those with an eye condition along with support and information for carers, and family and friends of all age groups. All ECLOs are trained to a high standard and have usually completed the RNIB Eye Clinic Studies course affiliated with City University London.

If you would like to know if your hospital eye clinic has an ECLO or to make an appointment, just ask the receptionist or nurse or check the waiting room notice boards for information.

For additional information please contact the IGA Sightline on 01233 64 81 70 or at info@iga.org.uk
