If you are blind or partially sighted you are also entitled to free admission to V&A exhibitions with up to two friends.     Ultrasound to treat glaucoma A French company, Eye Tech Care has recently started clinical trials of a new device which uses ultrasound to treat the ciliary body (the part of the eye that produces aqueous humour, the watery fluid that fills the front part of the eye) in order to reduce the production of aqueous humour and thereby reduce the level of intraocular pressure within the eye. The procedure uses a disposable device that is placed on the eye, which directs ultrasound to the ciliary body under the control of an ophthalmologist....

There can be no doubt that maintaining a healthy body weight is good for you and that being overweight increases the risk of a multitude of diseases and conditions but in a recent very large (120129 participants) prospective study carried out over the last 20 years at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary researchers have found that in women a raised body mass index (BMI) reduces the risk of developing normal tension glaucoma (NTG) and it is not associated with an increased risk of developing primary open angle glaucoma (POAG)....

    Jay Menon is a consultant eye surgeon at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in South Wales, with a sub-speciality interest in glaucoma, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the UK. Having always been a keen hobby musician, over the past year Jay recorded an album of 12 self-penned songs, initially as a purely personal project in his spare time.     This year we have decided to go the extra mile and in addition to our national campaign we will be visiting some of the main towns in Kent between June and September in order to firstly discuss glaucoma and eye health with the public but also to meet glaucoma patients, their relatives, carers and friends and take the opportunity to answer their questions face-to-face and raise awareness of our free information services. We are also hoping to have local ophthalmic nurses and optometrists visiting our stand offering the opportunity for patients to meet their local eye care professionals....

  • National Glaucoma Awareness Week 7th – 13th June 2010 [May 21, 2010]
    It is estimated that at least 1 in 50 people aged over 40 are at risk of having glaucoma, one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the UK today. The shocking reality is that 50% of people with glaucoma are currently unaware of their condition. In other words, potentially, over 250,000 people in England and Wales could be slowly losing their sight at this very moment without realising it simply because, in most cases, glaucoma has no symptoms in its early stages!...
