Tonometry - a measurement of the intraocular pressure
An anaesthetic drop containing a yellow dye is given to numb the front of the eye, The examiner with then shine a blue light into your eye. The surface of the eye will be touched lightly with an instrument that measures the intraocular pressure.
This is generally thought to be more comfortable than the air puff test which is often used by optometrists to help them screen for glaucoma and it is also recognised as being more accurate.
By obtaining accurate measurements of the intraocular pressure, the ophthalmologist is able to monitor the effectiveness of the treatment regime.
